Seychellois to have rest-house on Remire, IDC says

Reports of new luxury villa developments denied

Govt house on Remire

Remire island will soon have a rest-house that Seychellois residents can use to holiday.

IDC spokesperson Thelma Pool answered Regar questions about projects on the island after reports that the MV Enterprise had been taking construction materials to two islands when it caught fire last week.

Miss Pool said the two islands involved in the trip were Remire and Poivre. On both islands, the IDC was undertaking repairs to workers’ houses, she said. But on Remire it was also building a rest-house for Seychellois visitors while on Poivre it was repairing water and electricity installations.

Regar raised the question of current reports on construction of luxury villas on Remire and Marie-Louise islands by the South African group which had undertaken a project on Desroches under the label ‘Seasons in Africa’. The IDC spokesperson said there were no villa construction projects on those islands.

The rest-house on Remire will make at least two islands which will in principle have a rest-house for local tourism – Farquhar being the other one. But this will depend on whether transport to the islands can be available and if the IDC is really sincere in offering the opportunity for Seychellois. So far, the facility on Farquhar is supposed to be for the same purpose but only foreign tourists have been able to make it there. Its use as accommodation for overseas tourists has been questioned because it does not have a hotel licence. It remains to be seen whether Remire, a small island in the Amirantes 245 km from Mahé, will also be used for that.
